Throwback Thursday - Dark & Light

This piece, Dark & Light was originally created in a response to a call for submissions in 2008 for the theme Black & White for the January/February 2009 issue of Somerset Studio Magazine.

I have always been intrigued with the juxtaposition of dark: "black" and light; "white" as well as the need for both in art and our lives. In life, we sometimes have to go through some dark periods to really appreciate the light in our lives. In art, the dark will make our light values "pop" and really give our work cohesion. There are many metaphors for black and white and their co-existence, as well as many sayings relating to traveling through the dark before you can see the light. I wanted to combine these ideas while creating a play of positive/negative with the word "dark" being lighter on a dark background and the "light" being achieved in reverse also. In life and in art without the dark there can be no light...

This piece was not selected for publication for the 2009 issue, but was later published in the March 2010 issue of Somerset Apprentice Magazine.

Prints are available here... and greeting cards here...

The original and giclees on canvas are also available... please email if you are interested.
