Priorities

It is Day Seven of this new year and already I feel behind. I had a deadline for a submission for the Cloth,Paper,Scissors 2012 Calendar Contest. The theme for 2012 was harder for me… so I procrastinated… until the last minute. I only had time to complete one piece for my submission this year but I got it done and in the mail yesterday.

Usually the first week of the new year I like to get organized. Well that is not entirely true… I LOVE to get organized. In fact I am sure I have been heard saying “I have to get organized” many times.

We went back to our hometown for Christmas and it gave me such joy to hear my niece who is planning her wedding show me how organized she is in her planning. We attended my Father-in-Laws Birthday Party and a younger cousin was organizing everyone for pictures… I was giddy… I could just be the photographer and the hems and haws were not targeted at me. She is a project manager… I was a project manager… it is what we do.

So now that my submission is done… I will get myself organized for the new year. I have set some goals, personally, business and for life in general. Which brings me to the reason that I pre-empted my plans to organize this morning and write this post.

about priorities…

I am feeling a lot of emotions this morning. I am happy to hear about Ted Williams… I am sure there is a lot more to that story but on the surface it sounds like a good one. I am sad and mad to hear that John Edwards proposed to his girlfriend, okay I really think the Big Guy made a mistake with this one. I was happy to hear that Elizabeth cut him out of her will. A few months ago, I was happy to see that Mike Foligno, who we knew from his Buffalo Sabres days is now the Assistant Coach on the Ducks. But I was sad to read a recent article that his wife died in 2009, at 47 from Breast Cancer.  I am disappointed, I guess that would be the correct word to hear that Snooki has written a novel, “A Shore Thing“ … even my 10 year old was disappointed in that one! I do think the title was creative though. I am disappointed to know that Jersey Shore is in their third season (and I won’t just pick on that show as there are many other “reality” shows that are just as bad). They get the spotlight. Sometimes, many times the small stories, the everyday person living their life, raising good kids, fighting cancer, doing good at the same time, really making a difference…don’t get the attention. Maybe that is the difference… they do not want the attention on themselves… they want it for others or for their work.

Today, I am sad and mad to hear about a friend, Susan, who is dealing with her fourth cancer/ recurrence of breast in four years. It is just not fair… we only get two breasts and she has had 4 cancers. But I am happy and proud to know her, this friend is a fighter and a doer. Even as she is receiving the news of a fourth recurrence and planning her next attack on her opponent, she is doing amazing work. For others. She has put two organizations (Crickett’s Answer and LympheDIVAS, I love that name) together to help Breast Cancer Survivors with Lymphedema to receive sleeves that they may otherwise not afford. You can read about it on her own site Toddler Planet or on the collaborative site that she started… Mothers with Cancer. Take a minute and get familiar with my friends on this site, real women, real moms, real life in the trenches of cancer.

This is the reality that we should be focusing on…

So when you are planning your goals and priorities for 2011 please think about what is truly important. Figure it out before you get cancer, before you lose a loved one, before you or a family member get some other horrible disease. It is hard to do and sometimes you have to remind yourself daily, but it is never too late to start…

or to get organized…

Sorry. I had to add that one!!
