One CAN make a difference...

I am sure most of us have all heard about the promise that Nancy Brinker made to her dying sister, Susan G. Komen 30 years ago. A promise to make it better for others diagnosed with breast cancer. This past Sunday was the Komen Race for the Cure in my town.

Nancy Brinker, who is also a survivor, was the special guest speaker at the Survivor tribute. She spoke of her sister and a brief excerpt was read from her newly released book “Promise Me”…

I started to think about how one person can truly make a difference… I guess two in this case… one to ask and then one to fulfill the promise. Yes, she has had help along the way… but STOP and think about it….from sitting with your dying sister and listening to her request… to try and make a difference… then to go out and really do it… and do it BIG. It just gives me such hope…

The same hope I got on Sunday as I stood with 1700 survivors… watching women stand up who were diagnosed over 40 years ago raise their rose and wearing 40 pink beads around their necks.

Four down and 36 more to go…..

Need a Psychic?

Do you need guidance with color? With design? Do I have the person for you…

Jennifer Comfort… The Color Psychic…

She comes from a family of artists as her biography states… I would know this fact even if I did not read her website or blog… no… I am not psychic… she is my niece!
I love how this pose is similar to her profile pic!!
She has always loved art… she makes great dolls… and jewelry…  she is the one that originally introduced me to the magazine Cloth, Paper, Scissors… and if you read this blog you will know what a fortunate introduction that has been.

I absolutely love her posts on her blog… I struggle with things to post and from this side of the computer it looks like she has no struggle in that area at all.

So if you need an architectural color consultant… if you are trying to make some “green” changes in your home…if you want to learn about olioboards…or you just want a fun, uplifting read….

please check her out…

I just love what she did with this powder room….

Sometimes...It's the Little Things...

I love to organize… in fact sometimes I am so organized I can not remember what I filed something under… organization paralysis I guess… this year and my new year really starts in September… I am trying to organize this little art business of mine… to really turn it into a … well… a business. Each year since I first read Kelly Rae Roberts’s article in Cloth, Paper, Scissors September 2007 “Embracing Possibility and your creative dreams” about creating a creative life I have set creative goals for myself. First it was to find my collage style… then create a portfolio/body of work… get published…self-promotion with blogging,  a website, social networks. Now is the next big step for me… to make Drawn to Color a serious art business.  With that comes needed organization… the business end of the creative side… always a challenge for the right brainers. I am working with an accountant to separate my business accounting… website designers to create a professional website… navigating the social networks… that one is very confusing!

But sometimes it is the little things that can help us out when the big things are a little scary.  My little thing for today is a magnet board near my desk. Now I should say I have always had a problem with tack or magnetic boards. As an interior designer they are my nemesis. You can spend a ton… I repeat A TON of time designing an office space. Then move in day would come and all the trinkets and mementos would go up faster than the first box of hanging folders was unpacked. But I do realize that people need to personalize their cubicle… their little home away from home. I also realize… especially as I get older that sometimes we really do need something out … right in front of us… to remind us… TO DO IT!

So I decided I would put up a magnetic board for my little reminders… the things that I do not want to forget to accomplish. We had a white magnetic IKEA board from my daughter’s old room. I bought some metallic paint and sprayed the board. My Hubby hung it for me this weekend.

Now Magnets…. Hum…. I looked through one of my drawers and I found these…

Mary Englebreit thumbtacks… another favorite designer of mine! Our kitchen in our home in NY was all Mary Englebreit Cherries… The home was 100 years old and quaint…well it was after we completely renovated it… anyway the kitchen had black and red linoleum floors and red counters.... so the cherries went perfect.  I had saved these little babies because “ME” designs just make me feel good all over! I broke off the tacks....

and used magnetic tape and voila... magnets!!

Now I can put important items right out where I can see them everyday and the best part....
I reduced... reused and recycled!!!!

Take These Rings...

Last month I wrote about one of the two pieces that I was commissioned to create for the OC County Courthouse Marriage room here....

This is my progression of the second piece:
Concept Sketch... (client changed sign to symbol and added orange County, California)

papers, maps and brochures adhered...
you can faintly see the background added...

The heart was painted leaving the "rings" unpainted...

The "rings" were painted and background enhanced...
"rings" and heart were outlined in black
"orange county, california and i do" were created using  Tim Holtz Grungeboard Letters
"rings" were accented and "take these rings.." were also created using Tim Holtz Grungeboard Letters...

Voila... I hope you enjoyed a glimpse into my mixed media collage process....

Babe

In March, I wrote about the elusive Bobcat that I had heard about but had not yet seen.

In June there was an article in the local paper that her name was “Babe” and she had 3 cubs. There were photos published of her and her cubs hanging out in people’s backyards.

In June we also had a visit from a bobcat… my husband and daughter had just come home and I was out front. They got out of the car and as I looked at them I saw a bobcat come out of the bushes on the side of our house. As I was pointing and trying to tell my husband to turn around that a bobcat was literally 5’ in front of him, he was looking at me like I was crazy and had that ”what is she yelling at me about now” look on his face that husband’s have….He turned around and held out his hand… the bobcat turned around and went back into the bushes. I ran into the house and grabbed my camera and went out back. My son and I were standing literally 5’ from her… as I thought “this is probably not a smart idea” so we went inside…
my husband took the camera and went back outside and took these…
I had known that Babe had her cubs and this cat was by itself so I thought it was another one that liked our neighborhood. We would see it out front… in the road with a mouse… on our front porch etc.

I really wanted to see Babe and her cubs in our backyard, but I had read a recent article that she was back in the back bay at large and had left the neighborhood. One day last week I was on the phone with a friend… I happened to look into my backyard and I almost fell over. There sat 4 Bobcats. IN.MY.BACKYARD…. I told my friend I had to go… grabbed my camera…called my son to come into the kitchen and started snapping. As my son walked into the kitchen they looked up and started to scatter… Mario…the great watch dog that he is went crazy barking…. but I got some great shots…

When one of the articles was published about Babe, a man named Dick Newell of OC Trackers was mentioned. I had visited his website and there was a spot to report Bobcat sightings. I had not done this on the previous occasions but this time I thought I would report my findings. I was thinking that this was a different set of cats because all of them were about the same size. I sent in my report and that night Dick emailed me and asked if I would share a few photos. Went I sent a few to him he confirmed that it was in fact Babe and her cubs…Babe is only about 17 to 19 pounds and the cubs were catching up to Mom.

I offered all of my photos to Dick and he came by one day to pick them up. He has been tracking Bobcats in the OC for many years, he is so knowledgeable and interesting. I showed him all of my photos and the first one in March was just a few days before she gave birth. The one in June was also Babe. When I told him I thought it was another because she was by herself he gave me a little Bobcat lesson. “Babe will hide her cubs and go out in search of food.” I was surprised to see that she would leave her cubs. He told me that when she hides them they will NOT come out no matter what…. I wish my kids would listen like that!!!

I gave my photos to Dick and his team to study… they will study each photo and the markings on each cub.

I hope that Babe will stay safe and no one will try to hurt her and her cubs…
