People come into our lives....

A month or so ago I went to a book signing for Anthony Davis with my husband. While my husband was speaking with people I started a conversation with a man named Kirk Garrett. Kirk also knew AD and was working on a few different projects. One such project was artwork created from your DNA….by the company Yonder Biology. So cool…

We got to talking and I am not even sure how the subject came up but Kirk was a two year survivor of brain cancer. I told him how I was a 4 year survivor of breast cancer… “so you understand” he said. He was in his 30’s I believe and he was a little anxious and nervous. He told me that he had a MRI the next day because the auras that he had when he was first diagnosed were back and he was concerned. We talked more about our own treatments, fears, anxieties etc. We talked about how until you are faced with a situation and its choices you really can not make a decision. People can say… “I would do this” but until the facts are presented and it is you having to make the decision… concerning yourself… you really can not know what you will do. For some reason we talked about the choices if we were given 6 months to live. Would we stop everything and travel or keep doing what we are doing. I said I really don’t not know what I would do until presented with that diagnosis. Kirk said… “I would just keep working and doing what I have been doing. I have been given 2 extra years and for that I am thankful.”

The next time I saw Kirk it was on July 9th at another event with AD and this time with a musical group called Trey Smoov. My husband and I went to listen to their music… they really are good. Kirk was there and this time he told me that the cancer was back and he would be starting chemo again. Every so often I would ask my husband how he was doing. Mid August he told me that Kirk was not doing as well and the doctors gave him one month to live. That Sunday I told him to find out if there was anything we could do… if Kirk need anything. Monday morning when I checked in with my husband… he said “I have some bad news… Kirk died." He went into the hospital and 2 days later he was gone. He died August 20th.

My husband told me AD was in his office last week and was sitting quietly just staring. Lou asked him what was wrong. He said “a few weeks ago Kirk was sitting right here in this office and now he is gone.”  Rest in Peace Kirk Garrett…

OMG!!!

I am having a tough day today… After some errands I came home and went into my studio to work on magazine submissions. I was just not into it so I was stalling… I went out to get the mail and saw the latest issue of Cloth, Paper, Scissors Magazine.  I set it aside… figuring I would savor it when I was in a better frame of mind and could really enjoy it. Then I thought,  “I wonder if my cloth bag submission is in this issue?” I ripped off the plastic covering and quickly flipped through the magazine…

OMG…

One Path....

This past Spring, I was commissioned to create two pieces for the Orange County California Courthouse. My art would be hung in the Marriage Room… the room were civil ceremonies are performed to marry couples.

I was asked to create two pieces with the theme of Love and Marriage and Orange County.

This is the progression of my first piece…
my original sketch....

I adhere all of my background papers....old maps of orange county, fruit crate labels, travel brochures, textured papers...

next I paint in the background color...I wanted to pick up the colors in the carpet in the room...
then I add in the "path" in hearts....
addition of black accents...
The piece is finished with words and additional accents...
I will share the second piece in another post....

Even though this piece is specific to Orange County, Prints and Giclees are available. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss a commission to fit your particular needs....
