Art through kids eyes....

My last post was about a summer boutique that I was asked to be a part of.

It was fun to meet new people and see all of the women's different interests... clothes, jewelry, flower arrangements, adorned glass bottles.
                                my friends Rucsandra and Kristen....

I sold a few art prints and some Giclees. It was so interesting to see what pieces touched which women. This piece was a favorite... mostly because it being the end of the school year.

But I have to confess my favorite part of the whole evening was when 5 or 6 of the kids all gathered around my table... they were each selecting their favorite piece... what they liked about "their" favorite. I love when kids and art mix... they are so open and brutally honest...

"How did you do this?" was one of the questions... I would try to explain... "yeah... but how did you do this?" again I would try to explain my process. Much of the confusion came because I had a mix of originals, art prints and Giclees and they were a bit confused by them all. One of my friend's daughter's... who is very creative and artistic... had chosen her favorite piece. It was an art print of a larger painting. I was trying to explain that the original was 30" x 40"... BIG... and  what she was admiring was a print of a photo of my original piece.

She was not really understanding the process... which is understandable for 6 years old.... Then the brutal honesty came...."well the person that did this print is a better artist than you then."  I asked her what she meant and she explained... " you did the original... but is the person that did this print a better artist?"   Good question... so I tried to explain... I am the artist that did the original painting. Then I took it to a photographer and he took a picture of my artwork and made this print." "So he is a better artist then?"   "well... I said he is a photographer...I was the artist and he is the photographer." "hmmm"  She still not really understanding me...

So I tried a different approach... "Say you create a painting"... she shook her head as I know she loves to paint... I had her so far... "then your Mom takes a photo of your painting and prints it"...  she nods her head again....  "You are still the artist of the original painting and the painting that your Mom took the picture of."

The light when on and she said "OK"... "Mom I want this one...."
