It's My Birthday....

June 15th… my Birthday… I am 49 today… I have been married for 27 years… I have two beautiful kids… I have “survived” for 4 years. Five years ago I probably would have felt old today….already dreading next year and turning the BIG 50. But cancer can change how you look at life. Four years ago today I really did not know if I would see this day. I had chemo the day before and I sat bald, too sick to do anything… not even able to really taste my cake.

When I was young I would get so excited about my birthday and I would have these great ideas of what I would do for my birthday.. Or what people would do for me… but when they did not happen I would be disappointed. I do not set my expectations as high as I did when I was younger… I just try to enjoy the day and do a few things that make me happy…

I am excited about today… I feel better than I have in a long time… I am happy with myself…I am happy with my life…. I dropped my son at school for Field Day (no Math homework this week… which is a gift in and of itself) ….My hubby took me out for breakfast for my favorite pastry to start the day… I have enjoyed receiving wishes from my friends and family….The sun is out…My daughter and I are going to one of my favorite towns to walk through antique shops… Tonight they are taking me out for a nice dinner…

I know anything can change at any moment…(my yearly scans are due).  But today… this Birthday… things are GREAT… Now I will count UP to my 50th and my 5 year milestone… Like my Oncologist said… “IT IS BIG”

Art through kids eyes....

My last post was about a summer boutique that I was asked to be a part of.

It was fun to meet new people and see all of the women's different interests... clothes, jewelry, flower arrangements, adorned glass bottles.
                                my friends Rucsandra and Kristen....

I sold a few art prints and some Giclees. It was so interesting to see what pieces touched which women. This piece was a favorite... mostly because it being the end of the school year.

But I have to confess my favorite part of the whole evening was when 5 or 6 of the kids all gathered around my table... they were each selecting their favorite piece... what they liked about "their" favorite. I love when kids and art mix... they are so open and brutally honest...

"How did you do this?" was one of the questions... I would try to explain... "yeah... but how did you do this?" again I would try to explain my process. Much of the confusion came because I had a mix of originals, art prints and Giclees and they were a bit confused by them all. One of my friend's daughter's... who is very creative and artistic... had chosen her favorite piece. It was an art print of a larger painting. I was trying to explain that the original was 30" x 40"... BIG... and  what she was admiring was a print of a photo of my original piece.

She was not really understanding the process... which is understandable for 6 years old.... Then the brutal honesty came...."well the person that did this print is a better artist than you then."  I asked her what she meant and she explained... " you did the original... but is the person that did this print a better artist?"   Good question... so I tried to explain... I am the artist that did the original painting. Then I took it to a photographer and he took a picture of my artwork and made this print." "So he is a better artist then?"   "well... I said he is a photographer...I was the artist and he is the photographer." "hmmm"  She still not really understanding me...

So I tried a different approach... "Say you create a painting"... she shook her head as I know she loves to paint... I had her so far... "then your Mom takes a photo of your painting and prints it"...  she nods her head again....  "You are still the artist of the original painting and the painting that your Mom took the picture of."

The light when on and she said "OK"... "Mom I want this one...."

I have been busy getting ready to be part of a Fabulous Summer Boutique at a friend's home this evening.... I have some Giclees and art prints ready to sell ...

I also created a series of original paintings titled 'Little Loves'...

I am starting to get busy with this little art business of mine... so exciting...

I am taking part in this Boutique this evening... 2 - 30" x 40" commissioned collages... a request for a submission for a magazine and perhaps an interested Gallery...

It really can happen!!!
